Whatever Works For You
My view on gear is that if it works for you, it is fine. I have spent a long time trying to hone my "tone." I have owned a ton of guitars. I have owned Gibson, Ibanez, a ton of Fender, Ovation, Crafter, Agile, Recording King, Xaviere, Parker, Harmony, Squier, Cordoba, and the odd Global.
My guitars run the gamut of expensive to fairly cheap. I tend to like Fender Strats and Strat style guitars alot. I also own quite a few Squiers as well. I also have electrics by Ibanez, Airline, Charvel, and Epiphone. I also have an Ibanez bass. One oddity I have is an old Hondo Professional Fender Lead II copy.
Acoustics are a Crafter TD-06, Fender FR-50 resonator, Yamaha parlor guitar, Cordoba C-5 classical guitar, Fender 12-string, Doff Romantic Guitar, Orangewood Hugo Live Baritone, Aria 19th Century, Blue Moon Irish Bouzouki, and a Roosebeck Travel Lute.
I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky 10 and 9 gauge strings. Why? Just have. They are cheap and sound fine. I am playing Cleartone treated strings for my acoustics, light gauge. I have been known to buy whatever is on sale at the time. I like Martin retro strings.
Amps
Again, if it works for you, it's fine. For recording and home use I use a Bugera T5 5W tube amp head running through a Stage Right cabinet with a Celestian speaker. I also have a Crate Dark Terror played through an Eminence 12" Cannabis Rex speaker in an old Crate cabinet. It's the Crate with the wooden crate-like cabinet wit the electronics torn out. Live I am playing through a Boss Katana 50. For practice and those metal tones, I use a Blackstar ID Core 40. Great for recording too, especially with the stereo effects.
I don't use a lot of effects. My board is set up to go through a Snark Tuner, ISP Decimator Noise Reduction, Boss Graphic EQ, MXR Prime Distortion, t c electronic Rusty Fuzz, Fender Flanger, t c electronic phser, t c electronic The Prophet Digital Delay, Behringer compression pedal, Boss Synthesizer, and a Digitech Pandora reverb all mounted on a homemade effects board.
Other pedals I own are a Boss Acoustic Preamp AD2, Behringer Graphic EQ, and a Behringer tuning pedal which are used at my church gig.
